Lesson Nine from the Expat Life Series – Children Abroad: Between Roots and Adaptation
LIFE ABROAD LESSONS
10/21/20251 min read

Raising children abroad brings challenges that are often bigger than we expect.
Children live between two worlds:
The culture of the country they were born or raised in.
The culture and roots that their parents carry and wish to preserve in them.
It’s not easy for children to adapt to a new place while keeping their roots balance takes awareness and patience so they don’t lose their identity.
The Real Challenge: Dual Identity
They speak one language at home and another at school.
Their friends come from different backgrounds, while parents want to keep original traditions.
They may feel they don’t fully belong anywhere not here, not there.
How Can We Help Our Children Adapt?
Respect their new culture: Participate with them in school and community activities.
Preserve the mother tongue: Speak your native language at home to keep their roots strong.
Emotional connection: Listen to their feelings don’t minimize their struggles.
Flexibility: Give them room to try, make mistakes, and learn from experience.
Summary
Children living abroad need to find their place between two cultures.
When we help them stay connected to their roots while embracing their present, they grow into flexible, confident, and balanced individuals who belong everywhere without losing themselves.
🌸 Reflection:
What’s the hardest challenge you faced raising your children abroad?
Did you find a way to help them balance both cultures?
